Rising Sun Branch users get a few extra weeks with their full sized library.
The branch's temporary downsize for renovations will begin December 1. Initially, the branch was to condense its services beginning in November. Now, according to Morgan Miller, assistant director for Cecil County Public Libraries, the full branch was able to be open weeks longer than anticipated. The project now will be underway from December through April.
Cecil County Public Library has planned a facility update of the Rising Sun Branch Library. The current library opened in 1994. The area's population has grown as have the technology needs. The project will maximize the existing space through layout and technology improvements including more electrical outlets.
The branch's security system will be updated, a self check-out will be added, and the children's area will be expanded greatly.
During the upgrade, the branch will remain open in what is currently the community room. Books, audiobooks, music, and movies will be available for check-out. Library services such as printing and copying, public computer access, and WiFi will still be offered. The shelves have been installed in the community room. They have wheels and can be moved to provide space flexibility.
Programs and classes will still be offered off-site and at the branch. Some children's programs will be held onsite prior to the branch opening for the day. Other programs will be held at Rising Sun town hall, Janes United Methodist Church, and at the cafe at Martin's grocery store. Miller said that Rising Sun Middle School will also host a teen librarian monthly for a book discussion group and STEM programming. The library will also have more outreach with Calvert, Conowingo, and Rising Sun elementary schools. "When we reopen, we may have more new library users," said Miller. "Rising Sun Middle School, particularly principal Rick Edwards, has been so cooperative." Miller said the the Friends of the Rising Sun Library have been "wonderful partners."
