Unless it's held under the lights, you can watch most of the local high school teams play baseball and softball without paying an admission fee.
But if it's varsity or junior varsity football, you have to pay.
According to Matt Roberts, Program Coordinator for Physical Education, Health Education, and Interscholastic Athletics for Cecil County Public Schools, school system policy sets admission fees for sports.
Admission is charged for all evening sporting events held in the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons.
Admission is also charged for all boys and girls basketball and wrestling, all varsity and junior varsity football games, and all divisional and conference track and field meets.
Admission cost is $4 for adults, $3 for secondary students, and $2 for both elementary students and senior citizens.
Regional and state event admission prices are set by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association.
Roberts said that admission costs provide revenue which is entered into a general fund. For regular season paid events, those who work for the school system get free admission.
For regional and state athletic events, only state passes are valid. School passes are not valid.
Additional funds for athletic programs come from within the schools.
Booster Clubs are determined by the schools. Schools may choose how they want to handle boosters.
"The Booster Clubs are designed to help the school/team/athletic department with expenses and added details to help enhance the program as a whole. Some schools have a Touchdown Club designed solely for football/cheer, some have an "Athletic Booster's Club for all sports. Some have Action Clubs that support the whole school and some have a combination," said Roberts.
At North East High, there is a Parent Action Group which operates concessions and raises funds for all sports. Rising Sun High has the Tiger Athletic Boosters which raise funds for all sports. Both Perryville High and Bo Manor High have athletic boosters and band boosters. Elkton High also has a booster club which supports all the school's teams.
