After a nine-year wait, you can finally cast your line in Perryville without having a fishing license.
Maryland's Department of Natural Resources has now approved license free fishing at Ice House Park.
Denise Breder, town administrator in Perryville, said that the town has been working to get a license free fishing area since 2009. With the license free fishing, all of the same rules and limits still apply to anglers, they just don't have to have a license in the one area.
"This is something we've needed. For our population, it's a definite plus," said Breder.
Town officials received notice on April 20 that the license free fishing was allowed beginning March 26. Breder said the process was started by a former employee back in 2009. The town provided information about fishing in the area and reasons they thought the area should be approved.
"Every six months or every year we'd revisit it, so it wouldn't be forgotten," said Breder. DNR officials inspected the property and the approval was granted. Next, signs will be installed making the public aware that they can now fish Ice House Park without a license. Ice House Park is located off Roundhouse Drive, between Lower Ferry Pier and the public boat ramp.
