Expect to see a lot more purple and gold in Elkton this school year.
As part of the We Are Elkton campaign, town officials have a renewed enthusiasm for Elkton High School athletics. So much so, that they painted the town the school colors last week.
In preparation for Elkton High's first home football game of the year on Friday, September 11, Mayor Rob Alt and town officials decorated the town and businesses along Route 213 in purple and gold.
"What better way to show the opposing team how much we are behind the Elks than to blanket the town in our colors," wrote officials from the Elkton Chamber/Alliance in an email blast.
There is also a billboard on Bridge Street featuring members of the Elkton High School football team. The sign reads "New Year. New Team. One Dream".
According to Michelle Henson, Administration Office Secretary for the Town of Elkton, the purple and gold decor will stay up. "Everything matters and garners support," said Henson.
The Elk football team lost their home opener to Kent Island.
In other business from the Town of Elkton:
• Work is underway to upgrade the Downtown Farm Market on Elkton's Howard Street. Henson is visiting farm markets in Bel Air and Perryville in an effort to get ideas on improving Elkton's market. She said the plan for next year is to create a "producer's market". She is in search of vendors to work the season, from April 1 through November 30, next year. "I want to make it better and more community oriented," said Henson.
