For the first time in years, there's now a place to buy groceries on Elkton's Main Street.
Stop & Go Deli & Grocer has opened its doors at 127 West Main Street. That business is open seven days a week and has been in town less than a month.
An Elkton pizza shop closed its doors. Within weeks, another business, Main Street Pizza and Steaks, at 128 West Main Street, took its place. That shop is open 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily and serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
A brewery is also opening on North Street in what was formerly the Cecil County Administration Building and Elkton Town Hall.
Some of the permitting, due to the nature of that business, has to be
done on the state level.
Cathy and Jennifer Parsons will open Best Vacations in the downtown in March.
"We are filling those vacant spaces on Main Street. And there's more coming. I can't say what they are right now," said Elkton Mayor Rob Alt. "The brewery is still on target to open in May. And we will have our first travel agency in downtown in many years."
Alt also said that a Small Business Administration application has been submitted. a young couple is looking to open a cafe. He also said a local caterer is also looking to settle in on Main Street.
"I'm extremely excited about business development," said Alt.
He said he was sorry that Jake's Wayback Burgers closed but was glad a new business located in that storefront.
"We have our challenges. We will have statistics shortly that show that our crime rate had gone down and that we are moving in the right direction. The police department has done a wonderful job with saturation patrols. We are doing everything we can to put bad guys in jail," said Alt.
