While new businesses are coming to Rising Sun's downtown, the local dry cleaner has shut its doors.
All but one customer at the Quarryville, Pa. location has picked up their dry cleaning, following the announcement in February that Clean Enterprises would discontinue their dry cleaning operations.
It's another story at the Rising Sun location. There are still a myriad of unclaimed clothes there.
"Anything that's not claimed, we'll hang onto it for a year from the day we received it," said Shannon Howell. Howell is the granddaughter of the original owners of the business, Charles and Betty Temple. In mid to early February, the family announced that they are discontinuing the dry cleaning business but will keep their laundromats and car washes in Quarryville, Oxford, and Rising Sun. The Rising Sun dog wash will also remain open. The last day that the business accepted dry cleaning orders was February 10. They had asked for all clothes to be picked up by February 24.
Howell explained why the dry cleaning business closed. She said that the dry cleaning management staff retired. She also said that equipment at the dry cleaners needed to be upgraded so doing that was cost prohibitive. "Dry cleaning has fallen off. It was the cost of replacing everything versus the money it would bring in," said Howell.
She said that aside from those who retired, no jobs were lost due to the dry cleaning business closure. "All of our staff at the plant were in the retirement age bracket," Howell added. "We've appreciated our customers."
