Desiree Davis took a break from volunteering last Tuesday to collect an award from Rising Sun officials.
Davis was named the town's 2014 Citizen of the Year by Mayor Travis Marion. She received a plaque for the honor.
Marion explained that Davis' volunteering and leadership have led to the betterment of the community. She and the rest of the membership of Way of Life Community church brought the first Color Run ever held in the county to Rising Sun. She also coordinated the second annual Fall Spooktacular which brought thousands of people to the downtown in October.
"She has an infectious spirit and is willing to bend over backwards. She's a joy to work with," said the mayor.
Davis took a break from leading a group of sixth and ninth graders at the church to collect the award. She was anxious to return to oversee them.
"I'm very honored. I grew up in the town," said Davis, whose family - the Belews - own downtown businesses and properties.
"I love the Town of Rising Sun and can't wait to see more family and fun events that will pull the town together," she said.
She leads both children's and youth programs at Way of Life Community and said that all children, whether they belong to the church or not, are welcome to join the programs.
Commissioner Allen Authenreath also commended Davis. "Thank you. We really appreciate all you've done. Keep helping us out. We really appreciate it," said Authenreath.
