Countdown to Sunfest 2017
by Lisa Tome
With a mix of returning favorites and a slew of brand new vendors, Sunfest 2017 is coming together nicely.
The event is set for Saturday, June 3 in downtown Rising Sun.
Sunfest chairman Vincent Sammons said a great deal came together earlier than usual this year. "In a nutshell, we probably have about 50 percent new vendors due to early sign up. Many of which were crafters as we received a lot of feedback that folks wanted more handmade items," said Sammons. He recruited those who make handicrafts.
As of last week, 80 percent of the 150 vendor spaces have been reserved. "We typically get a last minute rush towards the last few weeks. This year, we opened the registration right after Christmas so folks could start preparing over the holiday breaks. We were 50 percent filled by the end of January with many new vendors wanting to get into the event. We have many new handcrafted vendors," said Sammons. He also said that the website now includes maps and the parade route for both vendors and attendees.
The Sunfest parade kicks off at 9 a.m. Line-up is in the Rising Sun Towne Center.
When it comes to entertainment, new acts will appear this year. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:45 a.m. Performers from Cecil Dancenter appear at 10 a.m. That group is new to Sunfest. Oxford Center for Dance takes the stage at 10:30 a.m. Rising Sun Martial Arts hosts a demonstration at 11 a.m. Sam Anderson, performs music at 11:30. That is also a new act. Jack Foreaker's puppet show is at 12:30 p.m. Street Lamp Productions takes the stage at 1 p.m. Ted Elvis performs at 1:30 p.m.
Town officials and the Chamber members will participate in the second annual tug of war at 2 p.m. There will be a pie eating contest at 2:15 p.m. The One Eyed Jacks, a local favorite singing group, perform at 2:30 p.m. Samm's Lymphoma Fight Foundation is also hosting a dunking booth as a fundraiser. That group will have police officers, firefighters, and local politicians in the dunking booth as targets for ball throwers.
There will also be a large number of food and snack vendors. Shuttles will run from parking areas throughout the day.
Sponsors for the event include the Rising Sun Chamber, the Town of Rising Sun, BB&T, Howard Bank, APGFCU, Hunter's Sale Barn, Crothers Insurance, and VSS Business Solutions. "We hope to have even more (sponsors) next year as the event continues to entice folks from far and near. If you are looking to relax, shop, eat and/or watch live entertainment - Sunfest is the place for you on June 3," said Sammons.
