A new Perryville business is as much about giving back as it is about working out.
Pura Vida Yoga, a veteran-owned, Christian business opened with no fanfare on December 1. A grand opening with formal ribbon cutting was held Friday.
The business is owned by New Jersey transplants Becky and Jeremy Rondone. The Rondones landed in Cecil County as a result of being stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Jeremy remains in the service.
The focus of the business is wellness, fitness, and physical wellness, strength and agility. Becky formerly taught physical fitness to federal police officers. She has been a personal trainer for a decade.
What sparked opening Pura Vida was fundraising for a missions trip that Becky started on Memorial Day. She began holding outdoor sunrise and sunset yoga classes in the area of Rodgers Tavern. She had planned that as a one time only event. It was so popular that Rondone began holding the classes a few times a week. That led to the opening of the shop. She said that people enjoyed the fellowship as much as the classes. She has expanded it to allow for physical readiness training.
"I always said if I won the lottery, I would do this. But I don't play the lottery," said Rondone, who formerly worked at an Aberdeen gym.
She said that if people feel that yoga is not for them, she can work with that. She can provide modifications. Daily gentle flow, power flow, aerial yoga, youth conditioning and other specialty classes are held.
Community involvement is a top priority.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes will host an upcoming event at Pura Vida. Portions of Proceeds from the various classes will go back into the community. Pura Vida has already offered to partner with Perryville Police Department Outreach. They are also working with a junior wrestling program, and have events planned to serve veterans at Perry Point VAMC. Free classes for the veterans will be held. Jeremy Rondone also coaches with Perryville athletic programs.
"We're here for the community. We want to give back as much as we can," she said.
They are also collecting for Toys for Tots until December 16.
Pura Vida Yoga is located at 4925 D Pulaski Highway, Perryville. The business is in the small strip mall adjacent to Mary Martin Postcards. For more information about classes and programs call 443-206-2839.
