After more than a quarter century of overseeing the greenhouse at Cecil's School of Technology, you'd think that Jeremy Sedgwick would be feeling nostalgic that this is the last season.
Instead, Sedgwick, Natural Resources teacher, is looking forward to working in the new, larger greenhouse at the new school site on Appleton Road. The current greenhouse in Bay View leaks. The heater doesn't always work. And Sedgwick said the surrounding trees block the sun, interrupting the full greenhouse effect. "I'm looking forward to it (the new greenhouse) absolutely," said Sedgwick.
Since the 1960s, the greenhouse at the school has hosted dozens of people each year. Those people buy their bedding plants, annuals, perennials, garden vegetable sets, trees/shrubs and more.
Beginning in mid-April, the greenhouse will be open 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. school days for customers. There will also be a special Saturday opening on May 2 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The school's greenhouse allows the students to grow and care for plants. They also learn marketing, how to run a cash register, and the finer points of customer sales and service.
