The Bainbridge Development Corporation will use a $1 million federal grant to determine how much of former naval base's land is contaminated and ways to clean it up.
The grant, from the Department of Defense's Office of Economic Adjustment, will also pay to develop a plan to use the property and analyze the market for the naval training center.
BDC's 2005 plan to create a mixed-use community was sidelined when environmental contamination was found three years later.
While Bainbridge was selected as a top contender for a manufacturing facility which could have created approximately 135 jobs and $145 million in capital investment, the site was not selected due to lack of adequate available infrastructure.
The development corporation continues to receive requests for information from prospective users.
"It is our priority to work with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure adequate available wastewater," a BDC spokesperson said in an email.
The grant was announced early last month. Funding will run through August 30, 2017.
