Solanco's wrestling team had three finalists and finished fourth out of 28 teams at the Penn Manor Holiday Tournament.
AJ Wilson, Wyatt Jennings, and Kody Hart each advanced to the finals before losing. Wilson (138) lost 8-7 to Jacob Lizak of Parkland. Jennings (152) lost by major decision to Cedar Crest's Barry Breidegan. AJ Wilson won the individual title at 138 pounds to lead Solanco to a second place finish at the 18th annual Mule Classic.
Wilson posted a third period fall over John Carroll's Austin Smith in the championship bout. Coach John Little says the Solanco wrestling team is "regrouping" after losing six seniors including state runner-up Bo Spiller.
Seniors Wyatt Jennings (145) and Kody Hart (160) will lead the Mules. Jennings was 31-10 last season and won both the sectional and Lancaster-Lebanon League titles. Hart (160) was 22-11 and won a sectional title after placing third in the conference. Solanco secured its sixth straight Section One wrestling title with a 46-24 victory over host Warwick last Wednesday night.
"It was a great match," Mules coach John Little said. "Our team went out and got it done. It's been a great season to this point. To not even be mentioned as a contender this year and to end up 6-0 in Section One is truly remarkable. It's a neat group of guys. Through all the injuries and sickness, moving them up and down weights, there was never any complaining or questioning." Solanco's Bo Spiller remained undefeated by winning the heavyweight title at the Escape the Rock wrestling tournament Sunday at Council Rock High.
In the championship bout, Spiller won a 10-2 major decision over Kostya Golobokov of The Hill School. The Solanco wrestling team remained undefeated in dual-meet competition with a 51-14 rout over Section One rival Hempfield last Thursday night.
The host Mules took charge early. Solanco heavyweight Bo Spiller captured the prestigious Beast of the East wrestling tournament in Newark, Del., Sunday.
Spiller capped a dominant performance that included his 100th career win with an 11-2 major decision over Saul Wilkins of GAR Memorial in the title match. Spiller outscored his last three opponents 29-5 after scoring first period pins in his first two matches. Smith Middle School students spent last week working with challenging physical activities. Physical education teachers Scott Long and Carrie Falduts, along with Solanco wrestling coach John Little, led them in a unit featuring a combination of cross training and wrestling.
The cross training included activities such as large tire flipping, rope climbing, deadlifts, military press, squats, and jump rope. “It has been a pretty exciting time for the students,” Long said. “The cross training and fitness activities that students were introduced to have the overall goal of improving strength and overall fitness levels. Educating the students on proper form of each activity was the main goal of the unit.” Solanco's Thomas Haines captured his fourth PIAA wrestling title Saturday night. Haines defeated Pottsgrove's Pat Finn 6-1 in the 285-pound title bout at the Giant Center in Hershey. He is the 12th wrestler to win four PIAA championships. Solanco's Thomas Haines and Bo Spiller each won an individual title at the AAA South Central Regional wrestling tournament Saturday in Hershey. Haines (285) won a fourth district title and will be seeking a fourth PIAA crown. He pinned his way to the finals, defeating Milton Hershey's Tymere Eaton, Cumberland Valley's Jackson Stanford, and Harrisburg's Andrew Brown. |
