The Solanco wrestling team is gaining valuable experience during the most challenging stretch of the dual meet season.

Going into the season coach Tony Mendez knew the season would be a challenge. “We are lacking experience,” wrote Mendez. “We lost seven seniors last year and with that lost a lot of experience. Losing Jackson Houghton doesn’t help as well.” The sophomore was nursing an injured hand and returned later in the week. by Bud Hart
Solanco hosted the undefeated L-L League Section II champion Manheim Central Barons (6-0) on Thursday, Feb. 8, and as one fan said leaving the gymnasium, “that wasn’t pretty”. It wasn’t as the home team was soundly defeated by a 53-22 score. by Bud Hart
Solanco brought home two championships from the District III, Section 2, wrestling meet held at Hempfield High School on Saturday, February 18. Junior A.J. Wilson (152) was the first Mule to accept the gold on the podium after handing second seeded Luke Hirtzel (Warwick) an 18-3 technical fall at the 5:47 mark. by Bud Hart The Golden Mules closed out their 2016-17 regular season at home on Wednesday, January 25, with a 50-18 win over the Hempfield Black Knights. The Knights ended their season failing to win a league match. Following Mule wins by forfeit at 220 to Kaleb Tucker and 106 to Thomas Steinhauer, Hempfield’s Jared Loose and Solanco’s Sheldon Peiffer hooked up in a good one at 120. by Bud Hart
Each team won six of the 12 contested bouts in L-L League Section II action, but Solanco forfeits at 113 and 138 gave the visiting Conestoga Valley Buckskins a 41-32 victory on Wednesday, January 3. By the smallest of margins the Golden Mules eked out a 37-36 win over the McCaskey Red Tornado to open the Lancaster-Lebanon League's Section I season at home on Tuesday, December 13.
Joey Davis captured an individual title at 138 pounds to help the Solanco wrestling team finish fourth at the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships Saturday at Garden Spot.
In the finals, Davis posted an 8-3 victory over Josh Renninger of Annville-Cleona. Davis had advanced to the title match with two falls and a major decision. Seven more Mules finished in the Top 8. Solanco's wrestling team romped over visiting Manheim Township Thursday to set up a showdown for the Section One title on Wednesday, January 27.
The Mules will take on Warwick and Solanco can clinch its seventh straight section title with a victory. |
