Free throw shooting is proving costly for the Solanco girls basketball team.
The Mules misfired on 12 of their 20 attempts Saturday in a 42-41 loss to the hosts in the consolation game of the Warwick Holiday Tournament. The poor foul shooting prevented Solanco from icing the game and Warwick's Rylee Derr buried a go-ahead three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining. Solanco heavyweight Bo Spiller captured the prestigious Beast of the East wrestling tournament in Newark, Del., Sunday.
Spiller capped a dominant performance that included his 100th career win with an 11-2 major decision over Saul Wilkins of GAR Memorial in the title match. Spiller outscored his last three opponents 29-5 after scoring first period pins in his first two matches. The Solanco girls basketball team dropped a pair of games after earning their second victory.
The Mules suffered a 40-22 setback to Section Two rival Elizabethtown Friday night. The Bears broke the game open by outscoring Solanco 11-0 in the third quarter. The Mules trailed by three at the end of the first quarter and were down seven at halftime. Solanco’s junior varsity football team had trouble with visiting Kennard Dale on Monday, October 27. Kennard Dale won the game 38-24. Solanco's Cortney Johnson advanced to the state cross country meet by virtue of her 11th place finish at the PIAA District III meet in Hershey.
The girls finished seventh in the team competition. The Solanco volleyball team's season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Palmyra in an opening round district match Saturday.
Palmyra prevailed 25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 25-12. After serving as an assistant coach since 1999, Chad McDowell is getting his opportunity to lead one of Solanco's varsity basketball programs.
McDowell was recently named head coach of the Mules' girls program. The Solanco volleyball team was swept by Warwick in the opening round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League tournament Friday at Elizabethtown.
Gabby Recay recorded six kills to pace the Mules and Maribeth Ault added four. Taylor Wagoner had eight assists and three aces. It was a frustrating week for coach Ron Miller and the Solanco boys soccer team.
Entering the week on a three-game win streak, the Mules dropped two games and Miller said the officiating played a role in both defeats. Undefeated Manheim Central topped Solanco 1-0 Saturday. The Barons' goal came on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. |
