Solanco's girls basketball team concluded the season with a 53-37 loss to host Ephrata Tuesday, February 3.
The playoff-bound Mounts proved too tough a task for the Mules on a night where Ephrata honored their seniors and star Kelly Liebl reached the 1,000-point milestone. Solanco's Taylor Stitz had a huge night in the final game of her career. Stitz collected 12 points and 15 rebounds, 10 of them coming on the offensive glass. "It's a testament to how hard she works," coach Chad McDowell said. "She does all the little things very well. I was glad to see her end her high school career with a night like that." Solanco secured its sixth straight Section One wrestling title with a 46-24 victory over host Warwick last Wednesday night.
"It was a great match," Mules coach John Little said. "Our team went out and got it done. It's been a great season to this point. To not even be mentioned as a contender this year and to end up 6-0 in Section One is truly remarkable. It's a neat group of guys. Through all the injuries and sickness, moving them up and down weights, there was never any complaining or questioning." It was a happy Senior Night for the Solanco girls basketball team.
After honoring their five seniors prior to the game, the Mules defeated Garden Spot 33-24. The Spartans led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter before the Mules switched from man-to-man defense to a zone. The Solanco girls basketball team struggled on offense last week, losing three of four games.
The Mules lost 50-38 to host York Country Day Saturday night. "It was pretty competitive for most of the game," Solanco coach Chad McDowell said. "We had a little lull in the third quarter." Solanco's Bo Spiller remained undefeated by winning the heavyweight title at the Escape the Rock wrestling tournament Sunday at Council Rock High.
In the championship bout, Spiller won a 10-2 major decision over Kostya Golobokov of The Hill School. The Solanco girls basketball team lost twice last week.
McCaskey downed the Mules 51-31 Friday night. The visitors started strong, outscoring Solanco 19-4 in the first quarter. The Solanco wrestling team remained undefeated in dual-meet competition with a 51-14 rout over Section One rival Hempfield last Thursday night.
