Rising Sun wrestling battled to a 42-37 victory over visiting Perryville on Wednesday, January 25. "We had high expectations coming in and then we had a couple of injuries and a couple of guys go down. We only have one of our three senior captains healthy. So its kind of put a dim on our season when it comes to dual meets. So this is one that we had circled as a winnable one that would mean a lot to the kids. Our guys went out there and wrestled hard," said Perryville head coach Thad Gough. Rising Sun wrestling team downed Elkton at home 67-6 on Wednesday, January 18. "I think we were a little better off than we expected. Last week we had a real tough week coming out of Battle at the Bridge, going into John Carroll and Dunbar, then going into Bel Air. Coming out of the tri-meet with John Carroll and Dunbar with a win was a huge mark. So that kind of put us in a little better spot," said Rising Sun head coach Cory Hall. The Tigers took the lead after Silas Filliaux defeated Garret Deleon by major decision 13-4 at 132. They held their lead after Noah Ulrich (138) and Caleb Kirk (145) both added pins. After receiving multiple forfeits, Rising Sun's wrestling team collected a victory over visiting Edgewood 54-27 on Friday, December 16. "Its a tough match to go through. We had holes where they (Edgewood) had guys and they had holes were we had guys. It was back and fourth." said Rising Sun head coach Cory Hall. The Tigers took the lead from the start with a score of 24-6. "We have a solid core group of guys and some of them didn't get to wrestle tonight," said Hall. After having a 8-6 season last year, Rising Sun wrestling team is hoping to be a regional qualifier this year.
"We have high expectations, I think we are looking to win out our conference and pick up some tough duals with John Carroll, Bel Air and Dunbar," said Rising Sun head coach Cory Hall. The team lost two wrestlers to graduation, Max Foppiano and Tyler Jones. "Tyler was a big contributor last year and a state qualifier, regional champ and a Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference runner up," Hall said. "Max was a three year varsity wrestler, who placed at Battle at the Bridge (last year). He always kept a smile on his face and was a joy to coach. He was a hard worker and never gave up," said Hall. Defense wins championships.
Perryville's Zac Zacerous proved that adage Saturday night as he captured the 1A/2A state title in the 170-pound weight class. Although that axiom is typically applied to other sports, Zacerous (35-3) used it to claim state gold at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. Ten Cecil County wrestlers, including five from Rising Sun, earned a state meet bid by finishing in the top four at the east region tournament Saturday at Parkside High in Salisbury.
Perryville's Zac Zacerous had a sensational sophomore season last year, placing second in both the UCBAC and region tournaments and sixth at the state meet.
Rising Sun freshman Silas Filliaux showed that his UCBAC tourney title was not a fluke, but rather a harbinger of things to come.
Rising Sun freshman Silas Filliaux picked a big stage to claim his first-ever tournament title.
Filliaux dominated North Harford's Will Sadowski 5-1 in the 132-pound final Saturday afternoon at the UCBAC wrestling championships in Aberdeen. "It's crazy," Filliaux said. "I didn't even know I'd get this far." |
