Rising Sun freshman Silas Filliaux picked a big stage to claim his first-ever tournament title. Filliaux dominated North Harford's Will Sadowski 5-1 in the 132-pound final Saturday afternoon at the UCBAC wrestling championships in Aberdeen. "It's crazy," Filliaux said. "I didn't even know I'd get this far." Filliaux (27-8) was taken aback to enter the tournament as the favorite. "Luckily, they got me first seed, which I was surprised. I don't know how they managed to do that," he said. "But I obviously backed it up." Rising Sun coach Cory Hall pointed out how impressive it is for a freshmen to capture a conference crown. "There aren't many four-time UCBAC champs," said Hall. "He's got a chance to be one. It's a big thing. He wrestled tough, had a good tournament. This is actually his first tournament championship ever. He's wrestled junior league for 10 years and this is his first [tournament title]. Last week [at Severna Park] was his first final and this is his first tournament championship. We're hoping to see him step up on the podium and in position to get as high as we can at states." After a scoreless first period, Sadowski grabbed the lead with an escape "[Sadowski was] very good," Filliaux said. "I had a lot of trouble getting under him. I had to work a lot of wrist control and slowly it opened up. He had position and I couldn't get those high-crotches or duck-unders. I had to be patient. Meanwhile, the refs were warning me but I was just being patient and eventually broke through." Filliaux took command with a pair of takedowns. "I was just working and the duck-under opened up and I got it," he said. "The second one, I just dove down. See how he got sloppy there. He didn't cover his legs so I punished him for that." Filliaux is optimistic heading into this weekend's region title at Parkside High. "I think I can be a region champ, as well," said Filliaux. "States? I don't know. I'd like third. I just don't know because I'm a freshman. It just depends. That's a big step." Three other Cecil County wrestlers lost in the UCBAC finals. Rising Sun's Tyler Jones (160) lost 4-2 to Jacob Sweigart of Havre de Grace on two reversals. "Tyler had a real slow start to the season," said Hall. "He started out at 170. we bumped him around from 170 to 160. He was wrestling a tough kid whose been ranked in the state for most of the year and it was real close. he took him down in the first period. we would've liked to have had him kick him out in the third period. He had a better shot on his feet. Even at the end, he almost tied it up and sent it into overtime so it was a good showing. He got his first title last week at Severna Park and he finished in the top two here. UCBAC is not an easy tournament. it's a solid tournament. We're looking forward and hoping we can get him to a state placing this year." Colin Day of North East was pinned by Havre de Grace's Alex Lloyd in the 120-pound final. Perryville's Zac Zacerous lost 17-7 to Ethan Smith of Aberdeen. The undefeated Smith is Maryland's top-ranked wrestler in that weight class. The top four placewinners at the UCBAC tournament are guaranteed a berth in the region tournament. The other region spots are based on points accrued during the season. Rising Sun's Matt Childs (106) and Jon Price (113) each placed third. Noah Ulrich (126) and Richie Moore (152) each finished fourth. Perryville's Jarrett Hunter (132) and Teryl Cain (285) were each third. Ryan Berger (113) and Hunter Zacerous (138) both finished fourth. For North East, Austin Rice (126) and Chris Hanna (138) both recorded a third place finish. Bohemia Manor's Bobby McLennan (145) and Drew Stauffer (220) each placed fourth. Kristan Wardlaw of Elkton was third at 120 pounds. Bel Air (227.5) captured the team title followed by Patterson Mill (148.5) and Harford Tech (145). Rising Sun finished fourth. "It was a shocker," Hall said. "We had a lot of guys wrestle back, wrestle tough. We had some guys who needed to get in the top four [to gain qualify for the region tournament]. Richie Moore was one who had to wrestle in and he made his way in. That makes it a lot easier [Sunday] when I go to regional seedings. The guys worked hard. They've been working hard all season. We knew this season was going to be close all year. We had a lot of lumps through the dual meet season. But we were able to finish strong here." North East was sixth with Perryville eighth, Bohemia Manor 13th, and Elkton 15th. Comments are closed.
