There will be more than seasonal fruit at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church's second annual peach social.
"We will be serving hot dogs, beef barbecue, macaroni salad, and baked beans," organizer Shirley Miller said last week.
This past year, the Solanco Education Foundation awarded $18,000 in scholarships to graduating Solanco High School seniors.
That's the most the foundation has ever awarded, director Becky Guhl said last week.
"Some of them [the scholarships] are for one year and some for two years," Guhl said. "And we have ones that are specifically targeted for a certain use. One is for someone who will be attending trade school and another is for someone who is the first member of his or her family to attend college."
Pastor Scott Phillips knows the Southern End.
Now he's getting to know the members of his new congregation.
On June 5, he was installed as pastor of Andrews Bridge Christian Fellowship, a Mennonite congregation just north of its namesake village on Rt. 896 in Colerain Township.
"I heard of the opening here and felt pulled to apply," he said.
Solanco facing teacher shortage
With just over six weeks before students begin their 2022-23 school year, the Solanco School District is still working to hire teachers.
"We have 15 hired and have a number of openings," said district superintendent Dr. Brian Bliss.
The openings will fill vacancies caused by recent resignations, the superintendent said.
