Keeping wheels under the meals
When the temperatures head south, so do geese, swallows, and snowbirds –residents of the Southern End who go to warmer states for a week, a month, or the entire season.
Some of those snowbirds are volunteers who deliver Meals on Wheels throughout the Southern End.
Finding drivers to fill in for the snowbirds is one of Solanco Meals on Wheels' new volunteer coordinator Diane Hastings' early priorities.
"It can be difficult to find more drivers in the winter," she said.
Wheels and meals
For more than three years, Matthew Kirchoff has run the department that feeds about 4,000 Solanco students every day.
Now he's also responsible for getting them to school in the morning and taking them home in the afternoon.
Kirchoff was appointed to his new post on January 1.
He assumed the additional responsibilities after Jason McClune resigned as transportation director to become Providence Township's roadmaster.
