Quarryville firm will open fifth store in June

    Most businesses don't put a new store too close to an existing one.    Most grocers make sure all of their items are well within their sell-by dates.
    Most aren't BB's, a name chosen by founder Ben Beiler.
    The chain, which got its start in an outbuilding on Furnace Rd. in Bart Township in 1986, will open its fifth location on June 3.

Man’s first moon landing sets summer reading theme

    This year's summer reading program at the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Rd., takes its theme from the approaching 50th anniversary of the first manned moon landing.
    The 'We Have Liftoff' theme was developed by a national library organization, said youth services coordinator Sharon Roche.
    This year's program will kick off with three events at the library on Saturday, June 1.

    Keeping them there and turning them into active firefighters and rescue personnel takes time and dedication. About half of them stay through the years-long process.

Bomb threat empties campground

    UPDATE: Kristie L. Forkl, 41, of Lackawanna, N.Y. has been charged with two counts of terroristic threats and two counts of threat to use weapon of mass destruction.

     A bomb threat forced more than 1,000 campers out of Yogi Bear Campground, Blackburn Rd, East Drumore Township, on Saturday morning, May 25.

Fire damages house, leaves family homeless

   An accidental fire gutted a house in Little Britain Township Saturday afternoon, May 25, leaving a family of three homeless.
    The blaze in the 100 block of Nottingham Rd. (Rt. 272) was ignited by a lawn mower that had been used recently, Robert Fulton Fire Chief Phil Smith said.

Supervisor, board member lose races for spots on November ballot

    Two incumbents lost their bids for reelection in the Tuesday, May 21, primary election, according to unofficial results posted by the county board of elections.
    Eden Supervisor Randon J. Kylar lost his bid for the Republican nomination to challenger Lawrence M. Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus received 119 votes to Klar's 58.

    Two local firms are among more than a dozen victims of a scam run for over two years, Trooper First Class Kelly Osborne reported last week.
    Barbara E. Hogstrom, 50, of Turners Pond Dr., Lincoln University, is facing 50 counts of theft and bad checks, the trooper said.

Scout finishes Eagle project at Chestnut Level

    On Thursday evening, May 16, Alex Wright and other members of Boy Scout Troop 91 leveled the soil around a prayer and reflection area in front of Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church's Family Life Center.
    Once the ground is seeded and two benches are assembled, the project will be finished and Wright will have completed the last requirement he needs to become the troop's latest Eagle Scout.

    Members of St. Catherine of Siena parish recently celebrated the congregation's 175th anniversary.
    On Sunday, May 19, The Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, bishop of the diocese of Harrisburg, celebrated the Mass at the Southern End's only Catholic church.
    "We've been planning this for about two and a half years," said the church's pastor, the Rev. Mark Speitel. "We had to make sure of the bishop's schedule and then plan from there."

Solanco grad and a student to speak at Memorial Day commemoration

A Solanco graduate and a Solanco student will be the featured speakers at this year's Memorial Day ceremony in Quarryville.
    "Our goal is to have a short but meaningful program," said Vietnam War veteran Ron Fichtner. Fichtner, who has organized the program since it began, said it is held in the morning to allow those attending to join in the commemoration.
    "The people we are honoring have given so much, it seems little to ask to give up a bit of time to commemorate their sacrifice," Fichtner said.

   But six Solanco High School students did get through most of the 45 books listed for the first Intermediate Unit 13's Reading Olympics. In the process, they learned enough to tie for second place when teams from two counties competed last month.

    Although it's still Birth Care and Family Health Services’ main fundraiser, the annual auction has evolved to include activities for families in the community.
    "The community supports us very well. They're so generous and we like to give back to them," said Catherine Saunders, Birth Care's director of nursing.
    "It's also for us," said Birth Care director Mauren Ketcham. "It's a chance to reconnect with the children who have been born here and to stay connected with the community."

Fight over TV remote leads to machete attack

    A man has been charged with attempted homicide for allegedly trying to kill another man with a machete, state police report.
    According to police, Aaron Alexander Rowland, 20, got into a fight with a 24-year-old man at 703 Hollow Rd., Providence Township, and chased the older man outside where he stabbed him with a machete. The victim was taken to Lancaster General Hospital with a serious neck injury.
    The two men got into a fight over a TV remote control, police said.
    Rowland, 20, of New Providence, was arrested without incident at 2:20 p.m. on May 10, Trooper Nelson Renno reported. He was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and possession of instruments of a crime.

    On Friday night, May 10, students will have the opportunity to display different types of skills.
    The school is hosting a talent/variety show Friday night at 7. Doors open at 6:30. Admission is $5.
