Cemetery looking for a new superintendent

    But finding someone to take over as superintendent of the Quarryville Cemetery may not be easy, board member Linda Trout said last week.
    Les Clark, who has been on the cemetery's board for 30 years and is its superintendent, is ready to retire.

SECA pool to open with warmer weather

       Warmer weather late last week allowed volunteers to get SECA's pool ready to open Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial day ceremony to be held Monday, May 30

       An active duty Army captain will be the keynote speaker at this year's Memorial Day ceremony in Quarryville.
       Capt. Mark Bradley led an infantry platoon in Iraq and, after qualifying as a Green Beret, led a Special Forces A Team on three combat deployments.

Revolutionary War home on 2016 house tour

    One of Colerain Township's oldest historic homes will be open to the public early next month.
    The brick house built by Colonel Patterson Bell along the East Branch of the Octoraro Creek is being restored by owners Dr. William and Luanne Riddle.
    It is among the early homes built along the creek, from the village of Andrews Bridge south to what is now the Octoraro Reservoir.

Retirement community helps firefighters boost technology

    For months, Quarryville's volunteer firefighters have been collecting information about locations in their first-due district.
    Now, thanks to a donation from Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, they will be able to access it as they respond to an alarm.
    The retirement community donated five iPad pro tablet computers and a mini iPad to the firefighters. The tablets will be mounted in the fire company's two engines, rescue truck, ladder truck, tank truck, and command vehicle.

       Born with a defective heart, he has been a regular patient at the hospital.
       "I only have the left ventricle side of my heart," he said. "It's known as pulmonary atresia. That means the left side of my heart has to do all the work."

Football booster clubs to host carnival in Quarryville

    Two football booster groups will be hosting a carnival in Quarryville's Memorial Park later this month.
    The carnival will include rides, games, food, and other entertainment. It will be held in the park from 6 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17, Wednesday, May 18, and Thursday, May 19. On Friday, May 20, the carnival will open at 6 p.m. and close at 11 p.m., with fireworks beginning at about 10 p.m.

Store donates grill to Quarryville firefighters

    When members of Quarryville Fire Company's special division went shopping for a new grill, they had $500 to spend.
    Their first stop was Martin  Appliances, where they told store personnel how much they could afford.
    The store's management didn't think the firefighters should have to spend that much for a grill - so they donated one.

Barnsley Academy to offer full-day kindergarten

    Amanda Taylor knows working parents often have to struggle with their children's schedule when the kids start going to kindergarten.
    Now she's come up with an answer. Beginning in August, Barnsley Academy will offer private, full day kindergarten along with daycare.
    "My daughter was ready to start kindergarten when I was working for a bank in Delaware," she said. "I had trouble making arrangements for someone to meet the mid-day bus. That led me to enroll her in a private kindergarten in Oxford. My girlfriend had the same problem."

Shoes optional, organist says

    He's played the church's organ for church services, the annual Christmas pageant, and a choir festival.
    Now, at a community celebration on May 22, Bob Trimble will be able to share more of the capabilities of Union Presbyterian Church's restored pipe organ.
    "We'll have a walk through Broadway, some patriotic music, and we'll try to have a couple of numbers people can sing along with," he said last week.
    To get it just right, he'll take his shoes off.
    "I can play with my shoes on, if I have to," he said, "but it works better if I play in my socks."

Church selling commemorative bricks for new walk

    Members of Little Britain Presbyterian Church will be putting in a new brick walk between the church's kitchen and the drive that goes behind the building.
    When the work's done, people will be able to get from the kitchen to the pavilion behind the church without walking through the grass.
    "When it's wet out, it's messy to take food from the kitchen to the pavilion," congregation member Karl Mueller said.

Running in the rain

    Runners and walkers set off on Saturday morning, April 23, to cover five kilometers and raise money to send young cancer victims to camp.
    Early forecasts predicted a cool and sunny day. Those predictions changed, however, and the race began in a persistent drizzle driven by a brisk wind from the west.
    This was the second year for the event, and the second time it was held in the rain.

Twin makeovers on TV show

    It was a fun way to celebrate her birthday, Nicole Luecker said.
    "We were looking for something different to do as sisters as we turned 40," she said.
    She and her twin, Michelle, had makeovers courtesy of Rachel Ray's TV show. The episode was broadcast by ABC on April 20.
    The sisters first heard of the makeover when they attended the filming of a show in December, 2014.
