It was still a wildly successful week for the Solanco baseball team. The Mules received three complete games from their pitchers to sweep the three teams expected to challenge Solanco for section supremacy. "It was incredible," Mules coach Tom Fish said. "We beat three of our toughest opponents in four days and got three complete games. Sophomore Brady Thomas got his first start Friday against Elizabethtown and responded with a superb performance. Thomas allowed just five hits and fanned eight. "It was a tremendous effort by him on the mound," Fish said. "He has swing and miss stuff and had control of his breaking ball. He was really in control most of the game." The Solanco JV baseball team has been road warriors.
Unable to practice outside and then displaced from their own field by the varsity squad, the Mules have persevered, winning three games last week to improve to 4-1 on the season. On Friday, Solanco posted a walk-off win as the Mules were designated as the home team despite being forced to play at Elizabethtown. The Solanco baseball team earned its first win of the season by fending off Pequea Valley 12-8 last Thursday. The Mules stormed out to a 9-1 lead. Joe Murray had an RBI double and Darren Rutledge and Zack Leonard each added an RBI single in Solanco's four-run first. Damon Kreider, who was 4 for 4 on the day, ignited a five-run second inning uprising with a bunt single. Rutledge had an RBI double to left in the frame and Eric Lefevre clubbed a two-run double. When the Solanco baseball team scored nine runs in the fourth inning to take the lead against Spring Grove they could not have suspected the visitors would counter with an inning nearly twice as big. But that's precisely what happened as Spring Grove exploded for a whopping 17 runs in the sixth inning to down the Mules 25-11 Saturday. The Solanco baseball team surprised some people last season.
This year, the Mules are embracing their role as section and league title contenders. The Solanco baseball team's season came to an end with an 11-1 six-inning loss to Hempfield in the Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinals Tuesday, May 14. The Mules took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Hempfield took over. Damon Kreider reached when the second baseman could not handle a chopper. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Darren Rutledge drew a walk. With two out, Harrison Ault delivered a bloop RBI single to center. Caleb Groff singled sharply to left to load the bases but the next batter struck out. |
