When the Solanco baseball team scored nine runs in the fourth inning to take the lead against Spring Grove they could not have suspected the visitors would counter with an inning nearly twice as big. But that's precisely what happened as Spring Grove exploded for a whopping 17 runs in the sixth inning to down the Mules 25-11 Saturday. "It was a weird one," Solanco coach Tom Fish said. "It's something I've never seen before. It was a mixture of us having some issues with fundamentals and some errors and some timely hits by them. It was a frustrating inning to say the least."
Bailey Keys paced Solanco with three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Zack Leonard had an RBI triple in the first. The Mules trailed 7-2 before the nine-run uprising in the fourth. "What I like about this team is that they can be really streaky," Fish said. "When someone gets it going we tend to pile up runs. They feed off each other in both the positive and negative. They kept battling and that showed me something." Solanco was ahead 11-8 and six outs from victory before the Spring Grove mega-rally. "It came out of nowhere," said Fish. "It was really surprising." The Mules fell 5-4 to host Lampeter-Strasburg in the opener Friday. "It was our first time on the field," Fish said. "I can't say too much because I don't want the kids to use that as an excuse. I certainly expect our defense to be much better." Solanco took a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Caleb Groff and Joe Murray each singled. Taggart Hess and Eric Lefevre both walked to force home a run. The big hit of the inning was a to-run single off the bat of Damon Kreider. L-S answered with one in the second, two in the third, and two more in the sixth against the Mules' ace Leonard. "He was pretty sharp for the opener," said Fish. The coach is not discouraged by the 0-2 start. "We played two of the top teams we'll face all season," said Fish. "And we were leading both games although it doesn't feel like it."
