It was still a wildly successful week for the Solanco baseball team. The Mules received three complete games from their pitchers to sweep the three teams expected to challenge Solanco for section supremacy. "It was incredible," Mules coach Tom Fish said. "We beat three of our toughest opponents in four days and got three complete games. Sophomore Brady Thomas got his first start Friday against Elizabethtown and responded with a superb performance. Thomas allowed just five hits and fanned eight. "It was a tremendous effort by him on the mound," Fish said. "He has swing and miss stuff and had control of his breaking ball. He was really in control most of the game." The Mules jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The big blow was a two-run single by Taggart Hess. Caleb Groff and Damon Kreider each had a hit in the frame.
After the Bears had sliced the deficit in half, Eric Lefevre delivered an RBI single in the sixth. "That was a big tack on run for us," said Fish." The Solanco defense was solid behind Thomas, turning two ground ball double plays. "We played a really solid game all around," the coach said. Darren Rutledge pitched the Mules to a 6-2 triumph over Conestoga Valley last Wednesday. Kreider had his second four-hit day of the young season and scored two runs. The centerfielder had a hit to left on the first pitch of the game and stretched it into a double. Kreider advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single off the bat of Matt Murray. "It was pretty much a perfect start," said Fish. James Rohrer had an RBI single and scored in the second. Solanco carried a 4-0 lead into the fourth before the Buckskins scored single runs in the fourth and the fifth. But Rutledge shut the door. "He saved his best for CV's best hitter," Fish said. "His changeup was working and he had good life on his fastball. He got better as the game went along." On Tuesday, April 1, Solanco faced Ephrata, annually the team to beat in Section Two. And that's exactly what the Mules did – beat them. Zack Leonard carried a shutout into the seventh inning to lead Solanco to a 7-3 victory. "He was awesome," said Fish. "He had things in control the whole time. There were a couple plays we could've made in the seventh. He's as good as anyone in the league and when he's on the hill we know we have a good chance to win." Leonard, who had eight strikeouts, is 3-0 against the perennial league power Mounts. Bailey Keys led off the second with a hit, stole second, and eventually scored on a Caleb Groff single. A run scored when Karson Beane reached on an error and two more runs scored on a wild pitch and another Ephrata error. Lefevre was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. The Mules are in first place in the section. "We have a couple more section games before crossover play," said Fish. "It's way too early to get too excited." Comments are closed.
