Olivia Wheel tossed a shutout as the Elkton Little League Major Division softball All-Stars captured the District 5 title by defeating Chesapeake City 6-0 Monday, July 6, in North East.
Perryville's Carly White never found out what it's like to lose a District 5 softball tournament.
On Thursday night at Eder Park, White collected three hits and five RBIs as Perryville won the Senior Division softball title with a 13-3 triumph over Elkton in five innings. Elkton captured the District 5 Junior Division softball title by rallying for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Rising Sun Thursday night at Eder Park.
Rising Sun, which needed successive wins over Elkton to win the title, led 5-3 entering the decisive frame. Rising Sun scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to snap a 2-2 on the way to a 6-2 triumph over Elkton in a 10-11 baseball first round game Tuesday, June 30, in Chesapeake City. Rising Sun took advantage of the Elkton bullpen after starter John Cherwaty reached his pitch count limit with one out and no one on base in the fifth. Evan Slaybaugh was hit by a pitch to get things started. Daniel Tserkis and AJ Peterson each doubled and scored and Austin McGrady added a single in the inning. Owen Scott, who walked and scored in the inning, pitched a gem for Rising Sun. After allowing two runs in the second inning, Scott allowed just one hit and one walk the rest of the way. The Elkton All-Stars manufactured a run in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Chesapeake City 5-4 Friday in a Senior Division baseball first round game in Havre de Grace.
Jeremy Husfelt started the decisive rally by drawing a walk. He advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Rudy Webster. Husfelt moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball with one out. West Salisbury Little League dashed Elkton's hopes of a Major Division baseball state title with a 17-6 triumph in four innings Friday evening in North East.
Leading 3-1, West Salisbury broke the game wide open with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Teaman belted a grand slam and Jacob Long blasted a two-run roundtripper. Josh DeRocher belted a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to propel the Sharpsburg Little League All-Stars to a 10-9 triumph over Elkton in a Major Division Maryland state tournament winners' bracket game Thursday.
Sharpsburg trailed 8-4 entering the half-inning before rallying to take a 10-8 lead. The Rising Sun Little League 10-11 baseball All-Stars prevailed in their third consecutive must-win game.
Rising Sun defeated Conococheague 10-5 Thursday night to advance to the championship round. Rising Sun needs to post two straight wins over West Salisbury to claim the state title. The two teams meet Friday night at 6 in Frederick. West Salisbury downed Rising Sun 7-3 in the first round last Saturday. In the Major Division baseball state tournament, Elkton was sent to the losers bracket with a 10-9 loss to Sharpsburg. Story and photo of the Elkton-Sharpsburg game will be posted Friday. The Elkton Little League All-Stars captured the Maryland state championship with a two-game sweep of Delmar. Elkton clinched the title with a 13-1 triumph in four innings Sunday in Delmar. Riley Grant recorded six strikeouts to earn the win. She also added an RBI double. Abby Sprouse, Karleigh Baumann and Emily Leonard each had two singles. Zaria Tatem provided a single and an RBI groundout. Hanna Cebenka contributed an RBI single. |
