Josh DeRocher belted a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to propel the Sharpsburg Little League All-Stars to a 10-9 triumph over Elkton in a Major Division Maryland state tournament winners' bracket game Thursday. Sharpsburg trailed 8-4 entering the half-inning before rallying to take a 10-8 lead. Elkton did not go quietly in the top of the sixth. With one out, Gavin Tereszcuk reached on an error. Tyler Hayden then doubled off the base of the right field fence for the second straight time to put runners on second and third. After a fly out to left, Elkton was down to its last strike when Christian Keyes singled to center. Teresczuk scored easily but Hayden was held at third. The next batter strike out to end the game.
Elkton next plays Friday, needing a victory to advance to the championship round against Sharpsburg. Behind a strong outing from DeRocher on the mound, Sharpsburg carried a 4-2 lead into the top of the fifth. Andy Jones ignited Elkton's six-run uprising by lashing an opposite field double to left-center. Marcus Ross reached on an infield hit but Jones was thrown out at third trying to advance. Teresczuk drilled an RBI double down the right field line to make it 4-3 then Hayden doubled to deep right to put runners on second and third. Austin Oliver was walked intentionally to load the bases. With Keyes at the plate, the tying run scored on a wild pitch and Keyes plated the go-ahead run on a groundout. Elkton extended its lead to 8-4 when Sharpsburg committed three straight errors on Elkton groundballs. Undaunted, Sharpsburg bounced back with a vengeance as Peyton Mason led off the fifth with a solo homer and DeRocher capped the inning with his towering blast to center. Comments are closed.
