The Elkton All-Stars manufactured a run in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Chesapeake City 5-4 Friday in a Senior Division baseball first round game in Havre de Grace. Jeremy Husfelt started the decisive rally by drawing a walk. He advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Rudy Webster. Husfelt moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball with one out. Winning pitcher Victor Norris retired Chesapeake City in order in the bottom half to seal the deal.
Norris pitched four perfect innings with seven strikeouts. Elkton trailed 4-0 heading into the top of the fifth before tying the game without hitting a ball hard. The first two batters walked and moved up a base on a passed ball. John Kivlin delivered an RBi bloop single to make it 4-1 and put runners on the corners. A run scored on a successful double steal and Elkton trimmed the deficit down to 4-3 when Chris Brinton reached on a Chesapeake City error. Brinton stole second and advanced to third on an throwing error on the play. With two out, Brinton scored the tying run when Will Lorman laid down a suicide squeeze bunt. Chesapeake City had gone ahead with a run in the second and three more in the fourth. Nathan Kendall led off the second with a single to left-center and Jeffrey Cunningham followed with a bunt hit. After two strikeouts by the Elkton starter Lorman, Peyton Browning ripped an RBI double down the left field line. Chesapeake City starting pitcher Joseph Garrett drilled a two-run double just inside the third base bag in the fourth and another run scored on a wild pitch. Strong relief pitching by Norris and Browning kept the game tied until Elkton managed to scratch out a run in the ninth. Comments are closed.
