Under first-year head coach Mary Dunman, the Perryville girls soccer team is looking to improve on its three-win season last fall.
"Practices have been a joy," Dunman said. "It's a hard-working group. Realistically, the girls want to improve on last year with our overall play on the field and win more games." The Rising Sun golf team opened its season yesterday at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club – Rising Sun. Aberdeen (213) downed the Tigers (216) and C. Milton Wright (231). Sean O’Donnell carded a 38 to lead Rising Sun and Derek Adams shot a 40.
The Perryville cross country team’s head coach Raissa Moore is optimistic heading into the season.
The Panther girls finished fifth at the state meet last fall and return three runners who placed in the Top 34, led by seniors Aleah Losoya (12th) and Allison Morris (18th). The Rising Sun girls cross country team returns its top four runners from a team that enjoyed some postseason success last fall.
The Tigers captured the Susquehanna Division meet, placed second in the region meet behind Kent Island, and were 14th at states. There's a sense of urgency surrounding the Rising Sun girls soccer team.
The Tigers return every starter from last year's team which lost 3-0 to Fallston in the section final last fall. Rising Sun has more depth than in seasons past and will be led by an exceptional senior class. Anyone who thinks the Perryville football team is going to be a pushover could be in for a big surprise.
It's true that the Panthers' three-year string of playoff appearances ended last season after a controversial 31-27 loss to North Harford in the regular season finale. And Perryville has lost most of the familiar names who were instrumental in that recent run of success. "People will be looking at us because we're young and we lost a lot of players," coach Chris Johnson said. "They may not think we're going to be very good." The Rising Sun football team is looking to rebound from an 0-10 season.
"Our daily goal is to improve," coach Rich Opp said. "Effort will give us progress. I keep telling the team that you're either getting better or you're getting worse." Junior Nate McCullough and senior Noah Juergens are competing for the starting quarterback job. Juergens is the incumbent having Jack Stewart midway through last season. |
