JUNIOR BASEBALL: North East eliminated Rising Sun 15-11 to emerge from losers bracket. North East must top undefeated Havre de Grace twice starting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Elkton. The Elkton All-Stars advanced to the championship round of the Little League Maryland District 5 Senior Division baseball tournament with a 6-2 triumph over Rising Sun Sunday in Chesapeake City. Brent Smith tossed six solid innings to earn the win and Mike Moran came on in the seventh to get the final three outs. It took four days but the Havre de Grace Junior Division baseball All-Stars completed a 7-3 victory over Rising Sun Sunday.
The game began last Thursday and was halted by weather with the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Rising Sun had two outs and runners on first and second. When the game resumed Sunday, Havre de Grace's Mike Flosser needed just one pitch to induce a groundout. Little League Maryland District 5 umpires are continuing to earn prestigious assignments. Joe Smith, the district's umpire-in-chief, will be umpiring in the intermediate baseball eastern region tournament on Long Island. Smith, from Rising Sun Little League, has previously officiated in three Little League region tournaments and a World Series. Dave Yale, also from Rising Sun, has worked a softball World Series where he had home plate in the title game and will be working his third region tournament at the Big League softball east region in Worcester, Massachusetts. Under Little League rules, because of the high number of applicants umpires can only be assigned to a World Series once every four years. The Perryville Major Division softball All-Stars were eliminated from the state tournament with an 8-1 loss to Sharpsburg Sunday.
Arianna Varela singled and scored and Jordan Morris also singled. In Senior Division baseball, Elkton downed Rising Sun 6-2 behind the pitching of Brent Smith and a home run and outstanding defense by third baseman Victor Norris. Rising Sun faces Perryville Monday at 6:15 p.m. in Chesapeake City with the winner needing to defeat Elkton twice beginning Tuesday. In Junior Division baseball, undefeated Havre de Grace scored four runs in the top of the seventh to down Rising Sun 7-3. Rising Sun is back in action Monday night at 6:30. Elkton swept two games from Havre de Grace to capture the Little League Maryland District 5 Junior Division softball tournament.
Elkton recorded a pair of lopsided wins in the two-team tournament including a clinching 28-1 triumph in five innings Sunday in Havre de Grace. The Perryville All-Stars lost 2-0 to St. Mary's American in the first round of the Little League Maryland State Major Division softball tournament Saturday at South Caroline Little League in Preston.
Perryville never quite recovered from a deflating top of the first inning. The District 5 champion's first four batters got on a base with a double, two walks, and an infield single, but Perryville was unable to score. Sarah Pender led off the game with a double to left-center but was cut down while trying to steal third base. Krystyn Gardner and Mara Little both walked and Payton Jourdan's infield single loaded the bases. The Rising Sun Little League Junior Division baseball All-Stars won their opening game before having their second game halted by weather.
Rising Sun downed Chesapeake City 5-3 last Sunday. Wednesday's game with Havre de Grace was suspended with the score tied at 3-3 in the sixth inning. It will be resumed Sunday at 5 p.m. Rising Sun Little League's All-Stars captured the 10-11 baseball Maryland District 5 title with a 3-1 triumph over Elkton in a well-played game Tuesday night in Rising Sun. Pitching and defense paced Rising Sun in the championship game. Starter Ethan Pierce worked five strong innings before reaching his pitch count limit and Jon Valentine came on to get the final three outs. Pierce yielded just two hits and two walks and hit a batter. The Rising Sun All-Stars earned the Little League Maryland District 5 9-10 baseball title by beating Chesapeake City 6-5 Tuesday in Rising Sun. Rising Sun came out of the losers bracket and posted two straight wins over Chesapeake City to claim the crown. In Tuesday's decisive game, Rising Sun built a 6-2 lead and withstood a sixth-inning Chesapeake City rally. Grant Mackie's two-run single cut his team's deficit to 6-2 with one out in the top of the sixth. |
