The Rising Sun All-Stars earned the Little League Maryland District 5 9-10 baseball title by beating Chesapeake City 6-5 Tuesday in Rising Sun. Rising Sun came out of the losers bracket and posted two straight wins over Chesapeake City to claim the crown. In Tuesday's decisive game, Rising Sun built a 6-2 lead and withstood a sixth-inning Chesapeake City rally. Grant Mackie's two-run single cut his team's deficit to 6-2 with one out in the top of the sixth. Trent Wilson followed with an RBI single to right, but Rising Sun came up with a huge defensive play. The relay throw from right fielder AJ Peterson to Lane Weismiller to third baseman Evan Slaybaugh cut down Mackie at third for the second out. Reliever Blake Flaugher got the final out to end the game.
As a result, Rising Sun is headed to Williamsport (Md.) for the state tournament beginning the weekend of July 11. Each team scored a run in the first inning. A two-out RBI single by Robbie Burns gave Chesapeake City a 1-0 lead. Evan Slaybaugh led off the home half with an infield hit. He advanced to second on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Slaybaugh took off for third when a pitch got past the catcher and scored when the throw went down the left field line. Chesapeake City made it 2-1 in the top of the second when Mackie was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Rising Sun got out of the inning when the catcher, Flaugher pounced on a tapper in front of the plate and fired to first for the out. In this case, an oft-repeated baseball legend came true as the player who ended the previous half-inning with a good defensive play led off the next inning. Flaugher smacked a single to ignite a four-run uprising which gave Rising Sun the lead for good. After an out, Weismiller reached when his high chopper could not be fielded cleanly. Flaugher scored the tying run when Matthew Trout reached on an error. With two outs and runners on second and third, Weismiller scored on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, Daniel Tserkis hit a pop fly to shallow right. The ball dropped in for a two-run single as the Chesapeake City second baseman and right fielder collided. Austin McGrady came on to replace the effective starting pitcher Weismiller with one out in the fourth, and with help from his defense kept the Chesapeake City offense in check until the sixth. Rising Sun tacked on what proved to make a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when McGrady delivered a two-out RBI single. Flaugher, who had moved to left field, threw out a runner at the plate to end the fifth. Flaugher came on to relieve McGrady with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. Comments are closed.
