The Rising Sun tennis team defeated host Perryville 9-2 Tuesday. The Tigers swept all five doubles matches. On the boys side, Danny Hanzelka/Luke Timcik topped Adam Strakna/Kyle Ciaccia 6-1, 6-4. Nick Holtman/Zach Alexander defeated Steven Lynch/Robbie James 6-7, (6-8), 6-1, 10-6. Thanks to Daniel Richardson, the Rising Sun baseball team finally got a chance to breathe easy in the final innings.
Richardson hurled a gem as the undefeated Tigers topped visiting North East 6-0 Friday afternoon. Rising Sun capitalized on three Indian errors to score five times in the bottom of the third. Nick Luciano and Will Barton each had an RBI single and Jake Bower delivered a sacrifice fly. The Tigers scored in the home half of the seventh to down Harford Tech 6-5 Thursday.
Zach Van Dyke smacked a single to right-center to start the bottom of the seventh and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Richardson. After Harford Tech elected to intentionally walk Adam Janney, Tommy Stover singled through the hole and Van Dyke slid around the tag at the plate. The Tigers tallied three times in the home half of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Jess Borchardt led off with a bunt single. The next batter, Madison Foard, fouled off two bunt attempts before lining a single between the shortstop and third baseman. Lexi Osborne followed with a groundball single to right to plate Borchardt with the go-ahead run and Foard and Osborne each moved up a base on the throw to the plate. Julie Eller has stepped down from her post as Rising Sun High field hockey coach. "It's an issue of time," Eller said Saturday morning. "I have a lot more responsibility at school and I'm trying to get my Master's degree." Eller, a social studies teacher at Rising Sun Middle School, served as head coach for two seasons after one year as an assistant. "I'm going to miss the girls," she said. Eller, who played for the Tigers, says she still plans to stay involved with the sport. "With what free time I do have, I'm going to be working with the middle school girls and trying to build the feeder program back up, get the girls interested in the game and teach them some basic skills. Hopefully the high school team will reap the benefits." Rising Sun High School athletic director George Hildebran said he hopes to have a replacement by the end of the school year. "We're going to miss Julie," Hildebran said. "She did very well." The Rising Sun boys lacrosse team recorded a pair of blowout victories last week. The Tigers downed Bohemia Manor 13-3 last Thursday. Attackman Brad Alexander registered five goals and an assist. Connor Burkhardt tallied three goals and Jordan Edwards added a goal and two assists. Randy Rash, Tyler Lyness, Alex Billings, and Austin Philistine each scored. Rash, Kai Brewer, and Justin Hopkins each notched an assist. The Rising Sun tennis team smashed North East 10-1 Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers took the three boys singles matches with number one Nate Farlow, number two Zach Schaffer, and number three Shane McGinley each dominating their matches in straight sets. The doubles teams of Jake Vincent/Evan Holbrook and Danny Hanzelka/Luke Timcik each won in straight sets. Potent Patterson Mill pulled away from the Rising Sun girls lacrosse team on the way to a 20-6 triumph Wednesday. The Perryville boys and girls track and field teams won a three-team meet at North East Tuesday, April 1. The Panther girls (119.5) easily outdistanced the Indians (53), and Havre de Grace (10.5). Sierra Montz captured the high hurdles, intermediate hurdles, and long jump to lead Perryville. Angelica Conway (100 in 13.68) and Taesha Andre (200 in 27.81) each won an individual event and were part of three victorious relay teams. |
