UPDATED AUGUST 10
Firefighters from nine companies responded to a two-alarm barn fire in the 700 block of Firetower Road, Colora, the Kilby Farm, about 1 p.m. on Friday, August 7.
Lt. R.J. Gerace of the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun said that there were no injuries to people or livestock. The fire started in an approximate 160 foot by 50 foot wood-framed barn used to store hay and miscellaneous farm equipment.
Farm staff worked to remove calves and tractors from the area. Firefighters from Rising Sun, Water Witch of Port Deposit, Perryville, Elkton, Susquehanna Hose Company, Level, Union of Oxford, Avondale, and Cochranville and Cecil County Emergency Services Paramedics worked at the scene.
The fire was brought under control shortly after 3 p.m.
Damage was estimated at $400,000, $300,000 for the structure and $100,000 for its contents.
The State Fire Marshal's Office ruled the fire was ignited by the self-combustion of the hat which extended to the barn structure.
