Although technically, she isn't the manager of the North East Elementary School cafeteria, Janet Hammer's name tag states that she's the "Boss Lady."
The moniker was bestowed on Hammer with love by her coworkers.
Hammer has been serving up meals to children at North East Elementary for one tenth of her life. She's the school system's oldest employee and has worked at the school for eight years. She turned 80 on December 23.
Hammer had other jobs before - she worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground, a local funeral home, and at an auto parts store. But she says that preparing and serving breakfast and lunch to children fits her perfectly.
"I love the school cafeteria. I like the kids. I like getting up in the morning and having a purpose to do something. I hate to think of retiring," said Hammer. She's the mother of three, grandmother of six, and has two great grandchildren. But at school, she has an extended family all of whom seem to love her.
