When Tony DiMauro, Sr. taught his first ever fire prevention lesson last week, he brought plenty of back up.
DiMauro, who is the father of five sons, brought three of them along for the safety program which was conducted at Conowingo Elementary School.
Tony Jr., Taylor, and Tyler are members of Water Witch Fire Company with their father. The sons who did not attend were busy with studies, one in the Fire Science program at Cecil School of Technology and the other in classes at Perryville Middle.
DiMauro, Sr. admitted to being extremely nervous about talking fire prevention with the children. Water Witch Fire Chief Greg Miller gave DiMauro a pep talk and encouragement before the presentation began.
"We're here to learn fire safety and turn all of you into junior firefighters," said DiMauro as he introduced the 11 Water Witch members who turned out to teach the children.
He provided lessons regarding matches and lighters, smoke alarms and the testing of them, exiting the home in the event of fire, practicing an escape plan, calling 911, and more.
One little girl expressed that she didn't want to leave her bed pillows behind if she needed to escape her home due to fire. "Don't worry about the pillows. We'll give you a new pillow," said DiMauro.
