Solanco's baseball team went 1-3 last week. The Mules (7-7) have a mountain to climb to get back into the Section Two race but a district tournament berth is still within their grasp. Solanco entered the week only two games out of first place in the section, but is behind three teams. "Winning the section is going to be very difficult but we're looking forward to hopefully making it to districts," coach Tom Fish said. The Mules lost 2-1 in eight innings to non-league opponent Berks Catholic Saturday. "It was a good ballgame," said Fish. "They are a successful team up there and it was a nice bounce back game for us from Friday." Solanco went on top with a run in the fourth. Derek Lavin reached on a two-base error, went to second on a Tag Hess bunt, and scored on a long sacrifice fly off the bat of Bailey Keys.
Berks Catholic tied it in the fifth on a balk and won it in the bottom of the eighth. Mules' starter Robert Beard worked seven strong innings. "Robert pitched awesome for us," Fish said." Solanco threatened to take the lead in the top of the seventh but encountered a bad break. With one out and runners on the corners, the Mules sent the runner from first. The batter hit a grounder that was only playable because an infielder had moved to cover the second base bag and Berks Catholic was able to turn a double play. Ephrata upended the Mules 12-2 in five innings Friday. The Mounts led 3-2 before scoring nine times in the fifth. Solanco had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Tony Rambo. Rambo tried to score on the play after an error but was thrown out at the plate. Ephrata took the lead with three runs in the third against the Mules' ace Kenny Walton. "They really hit the ball well," said Fish. "A lot better than they did the first time against us." The Mules nipped McCaskey 4-3 last Thursday. "It was a real team effort," said Fish. Solanco scored one run on a passed ball and another on a sacrifice fly to the catcher when Mike Worthington hurried home when no McCaskey player covered the plate. Phil Probst blasted a pinch-hit homer in the fifth to put the Mules ahead 4-1. Joe Murray allowed one run in four innings of work. "He's doing a nice job for us as our number two starter," said Fish. Brady Thomas pitched a perfect fifth in his season mound debut but McCaskey scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Walton pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn a save. Last Wednesday, the Mules lost 5-3 to Hempfield, the first place team in Section One. Matt McCarriston, Probst, and Dawson Gote pitched for Solanco. The Mules were down 5-0 before their bats came alive in the seventh. Keys had an RBI double and eventually scored on a wild pitch, but Solanco stranded two baserunners. Comments are closed.
