by Bud Hart Solanco's varsity baseball team ended the week losing three, but winning one, and it was a big one. On Friday, April 28, Haydn Fox, the young sophomore, pitched the biggest game of this season, shutting out the Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers 2-0. The Pioneers entered the game with a 10-3 record.
“What a game on the mound,” said head coach Tom Fish. “In control the entire night.” Earlier in the season L-S had hobbled the Mules with a 3-0 no-hitter. The Mules avenged that loss impressively behind their young pitcher. Fox struck out six and surrendered just two hits while going the distance. “He worked quick and displayed a fiery emotion much like he did in the L-L championship game last season when he pitched eight and two-thirds scoreless innings,” added Fish. Solanco scored in the third when Dawson Kreider doubled to left-center plating Mike Worthington. Kreider figured in the second run when he doubled in the fifth. Jack Boomsma, pinch running for Kreider, scored on an L-S error. Coach Fish was quick to point out that early defense kept the Mules in the game. “The game could have gotten out of hand early if it would not have been for some great defense,” said Fish. Third baseman Sam Buckwalter and Mike Worthington turned in gems according to the impressed coach. “If those two balls fall in, it would have been a much different game,” said the coach. Solanco suffered a tough loss to Hempfield on Monday, April 24, an embarrassing loss to Manheim Township on Wednesday, April 26, and a heart breaking 4-3 loss to Cedar Crest on Thursday, April 27. It was the L-S game that made the coach’s week. “It was a fun way to wrap up a challenging week,” said Fish. “We stand at 4-9 entering the portion of the season where we play our Section teams for the second time.” The coach is hoping that his Mules will make it tough on those teams the second time around.
