Garden Spot scored the game's first 10 points and went on to an 81-58 victory over the host Solanco boys basketball team Friday night, January 4. The Spartans' dynamic guard Keontae Nunn poured in 34 points with 16 coming in the first half and 16 more in the fourth quarter as the visitors pulled away. Dawson Kreider paced the Mules with 23 points. Carson Kilgore collected 13 and Zed Baker added eight.
Garden Spot employed a fullcourt, zone press which disrupted the Mules' offensive rhythm. "I think early on it did," Solanco coach Scott Long said. "We had a lot of careless turnovers. We just made some bad mistakes. It shouldn't have taken us that long to break it, but it gave us trouble." After being outscored 10-0 to open the contest, Solanco finally got on the board when Kilgore scored with 5:24 left in the first quarter. Garden Spot led 23-12 after the first eight minutes and 42-25 at halftime. Down 51-33 entering the fourth quarter, the Mules got as close as 61-53 on a Kreider bucket with 3:37 to go but could Solanco was forced to foul and could not contain Nunn down the stretch. The quick 5-7 Nunn and 6-6 forward Andrew Zentner present matchup problems for any opponent. The Mules managed to limit Zentner to eight points, but had no answer for Nunn. "We knew they were both good players," Long said. "We wanted to try to take Nunn's strong hand away, force him to the weak hand. If he got into the paint, we wanted to put him on the free throw line. He doesn't have too many weaknesses to his game, but he's not a great free throw shooter. It was a little late late in the fourth quarter once we got him to the free throw line." Comments are closed.
