Both the Solanco boys and girls track and field teams topped Lebanon Monday, April 18. The boys (4-0) earned an important section victory, 82-68. "We matched up with Lebanon pretty well in all events," Mules coach Ivan Haines said. "In order to win, we had to earn as many seconds and thirds as possible." The sprinters paced Solanco by scoring 34 out of a possible 45 points.
Senior Billy Cooney swept the two hurdles events and also prevailed in the 200 meter dash and the 4x100 meter relay. "Billy continues to dominate the hurdles," Haines said. Newcomer Kyle Dombach picked up a second place finish in each hurdles event, running a big personal best of 14.5 seconds in the 110. "The sprinters were able to pick up some much unexpected points in the hurdles," Haines said. Dennis Mitchem finished first in the 400 with a personal best this year of 52.6. Troy Miller earned a first in the high jump and in the long jump with a PR of 22-11.5. Noah McCardell claimed the javelin with a throw of 157-4. Gary Doubt threw a PR of 45 feet to place second in the shot put. Lebanon was able to fare well in the distance races, with the Solanco runners showing the effects of a challenging meet two days earlier. "The distance guys had a hard time getting their legs back after competing very hard on Saturday," Haines said. Overall, Haines was pleased with his team's performance. "This team continues to work hard and improve," the coach said. "I feel that the boys team has the talent to develop into a successful team, but we must continue to work and perform a lot harder if we are to reach our goal. The coaching staff is very proud of how the team performed." The Solanco girls won 13 of the 18 events and triumphed 111-38. The girls team did an excellent job," Haines said. "What was really nice to see was that the firsts were earned by underclassmen." Junior Jen Eberly picked up three wins, capturing both hurdles events and the long jump. Cortney Johnson earned a first in both the 1600 meter run and 800 meter run. Morgan Perry rounded out the sweep by the distance girls by earning a first in the 3200 meters. "Not to out done by the underclassmen, the seniors girls won several firsts," Haines said. Senior Christen Esposito won the 400 meter dash and 200 meter dash by running a PR of 29.9. Senior throwers Cameron Trimble and Cayla Robinson earned a first in the discus (104-1) and javelin (112-4), respectfully. Both threw a PR for the year. Casey Weder placed second in both hurdles events. "It was very impressive to see all the seconds that were earned by the girls," said Haines. "The girls team is coming together very nicely. These girls are working hard and will prove to be a team that may surprise others." Comments are closed.
