It should be an exciting season for the Solanco track and field teams. Coach Ivan Haines is hopeful the boys team will improve on last year's 4-3 record in section meets. Juniors Troy Miller (known as Troy Berry last year) and Billy Cooney will be among the athletes leading the Mules. Miller finished third in the state in the high jump last spring. He will be a factor in all three jumps and can help in the sprints. Cooney qualified for districts in the hurdles. Robbie Hassel, Cody Riley, Prosper Equaouwa and Josh Bailey will lead the sprinters. Noah Brady, Matt Curran, Kyle Munro and Liam Hodgson head the list of distance runners.
Kyle Williams, JJ Gambler and Noah McCardell will be counted on in the throws. Haines said Jayson and Eric Hopkins will help out in some events. "With only eight seniors there are many new or one-year experienced athletes in all events," Haines said. Once they get down techniques and acquire some meet experience these new athletes should prove to be very competitive. We are again setting individual goals as well as a team goal of being 5-2 or higher in our section…We hope to surprise a lot of teams this year." The girls team is relatively low in number (30) but has talent and experience with 10 seniors. "Many of the seniors have been on the team and earning varsity points for four years," Haines said. The Mules will be relying on Cassie Twyman in the sprints and long jump. Pole vaulter Brooke McCardell qualified for districts last season. Solanco boasts talent and depth in the mid-distance and distance events. Carly Allport, Abby Yoder, and Natalie Crum will contribute in the middle distances. Essi Glah-Fisher, Cortney Johnson and Morgan Perry will score points in the distance races. Jen Eberly and Karly Burkholder will lead the hurdlers. Solanco will count on throwers Emily Conklin, Ashley Mundorff and Cayla Robinson. "If the girls meet their individual goals we will have a successful year," Haines said. Comments are closed.
