The Solanco field hockey team played on even terms with visiting Kennard-Dale between the circles.
It's what happened in the scoring area that decided the outcome.
Kennard-Dale took advantage of its opportunities and downed the Mules 5-1 in the season opener Friday, August 30.
Solanco outshot Kennard-Dale 11-9 and earned 13 corner chances compared to five for the Rams. "I feel like we were more dominant," Solanco coach Whitney Hawkins said. "We just didn't execute in the circle and we didn't execute defensively."
Jenna Soukaseum scored three goals in a 7 minute, 19 second span of the first half to put the Rams in front 3-0. Jenna Crosby made it 4-0 with 21:03 remaining.
Solanco got on the board 62 seconds later when Mariah Stoltzfus converted a penalty stroke. K-D's Aiyana Eber capped the scoring midway through the second half.
Hawkins believes the Mules will quickly become more adept at seizing their opportunities during games. "In practice, we're more relaxed and even in warmup they had good touches hitting it in," said Hawkins. "I think it's the first game and we got a little frantic in the circle. We were a little hype about everything. We got nervous."
Overall, Hawkins was pleased with her team's performance.
"They played really well," the coach said. "It didn't turn out how I wanted but they played really well. They passed. They did everything I asked them to do. We just couldn't get it in the back of the net."
