by Bud Hart Solanco hosted the undefeated L-L League Section II champion Manheim Central Barons (6-0) on Thursday, Feb. 8, and as one fan said leaving the gymnasium, “that wasn’t pretty”. It wasn’t as the home team was soundly defeated by a 53-22 score. “It was a tough one last night,” wrote head coach John Little. “I cannot really say we were favored in any of the bouts we lost, but I was disappointed in our lack of competitiveness and not taking the match to Manheim.”
The Barons benefitted from three forfeits at 285, 113, and 220 during the contest and giving a top team 18 points is a real challenge. After forfeiting the 285 pound match to Central, the first contested match witnessed Dom Flatt take a 7-4 lead into the third period, but the undersized freshman got caught in the final seconds, losing by fall at 106. Zach Spade was the first to light up the scoreboard for the Mules when he flattened his opponent with a 1:40 pin at 126. After Central won at 132 with a tech fall increasing their lead to 26-6, Gray Charles won by major decision (8-0) to narrow the margin to 16 (26-10). Entering the 160-pound bout, the visitors had everything in hand, but AJ Wilson and Ben Root had their way with their respective opponents. Wilson, at 160, dispatched of his opponent in a time of 35 seconds, and Root needed but 38 seconds to show his man the lights at 170. From there on it was all Barons with falls at 182, 195, and a forfeit at 220. Solanco ended their Section I season with a record of 4-3 and now both teams’ wrestlers await Sectionals and Districts with a hope of state recognition. “Hopefully we will regroup and have a good post season,” said Little.
