by Bud Hart “I’m having fun,” said fourth grade student/athlete Aubree Seiberlich. “Speed and agility training is my favorite.” That's how the young girls attending the annual Solanco girls' basketball camp viewed their experience. Another fourth grade student, Katelyn Masterson, echoed the Seiberlich's comment. “Yeah, we’re having fun and I like the speed and agility training as well.”
In all 45 girls attended the camp held at the high school from Monday, June 25, through Wednesday, June 27. Kendal Janssen, a ninth grade junior high player, said being with friends was a highlight of her camp experience. “I also want to work hard and get better,” added the student/athlete. Eighth grade junior high player Alyssa Harpe said she enjoyed being with friends and had a purpose in attending the three-day camp. “I am working on what I need to do to improve for this season,” said Harpe. Girls basketball head coach Chad McDowell said he was pleased with the support he received from his returning varsity team. “Every one of the girls assisted in the camp,” said McDowell. “They were awesome.” Jess Cabrera, a 2017/18 first-team L-L League, Section II, all-star and one of the senior counselors of this year’s camp, said she worked the girls on free throw skills. “I was pleased to see the girl’s progress from day to day,“ said the incoming senior captain. McDowell, who along with assistant coaches Jeff McCardell, Morgan Miller, and Matt Himmelberger, challenged the attendees with various work station drills. “We’re reinforcing the basic skills,” said McDowell. “We’re working on ball handling, how to catch a ball, shooting technique, defensive drills, rebounding and dribbling.” In addition, the speed and agility training popular with most of the girls attending, was a feature of the camp. There were other benefits received at the camp as each girl attending was presented with a free t-shirt and basketball. “I also want to commend my varsity and junior varsity players,” said McDowell. “Not only are they assisting with the camp, they are voluntarily staying one hour after the camp to perfect their game. They got a taste of success last season and want to improve upon that success.” While there was perspiration and ruddy complexions during the drills, there were smiles and abundant “high fives” flying. “This was a great camp,” said McDowell. “We’re building for the future.” Comments are closed.
