It was a frustrating week for the Solanco boys soccer team. The Mules were walloped by a powerful Carlisle squad Saturday after a gut-wrenching defeat to Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday, September 8. Carlisle topped Solanco 7-0 Saturday morning. "Carlisle is a very, very good team," Mules coach Ron Miller said. "They have five players in the Olympic Development Program and it showed." Carlisle tallied five times in the first half including two penalty kicks.
"We were definitely outplayed," said Miller. "They were the much better team. No doubt about it." The coach believes playing tough non-league foes will benefit the Mules. "I want to play good teams," he said. "It forces you to play at a higher level." Against Lampeter-Strasburg, the Mules squandered a 3-0 lead and fell 4-3. "It was probably the most frustrating loss I've had as a player or coach at any level," Miller said. Solanco led 3-0 after the first 35 minutes. "It was absolute, total domination," the coach said. Nick Boulé scored two goals and assisted on one by Britt Yoder. Five minutes before halftime, Mules' goalie Dylan Sheaffer made a spectacular save on a free kick, but L-S scored on the rebound. Solanco still led 3-1 at the break. "We played 40 minutes practically flawless," Miller said. The second half was a different story as the game became increasingly physical. L-S scored three goals in the first 11 minutes to grab a 4-3 advantage. "We were flat-footed," said Miller. "We were playing barnyard ball. We played their style for 11 minutes. We lost sight of what we stand for." Solanco did not go quietly. "I've give them credit," Miller said of his squad. "They played their behinds off for 29 minutes but we just couldn't score." Last Thursday's game at Elizabethtown was postponed by rain and was rescheduled for September 28. Comments are closed.
