Solanco's baseball team stayed in the hunt for a playoff berth by winning two of three crossover games last week. The Mules nipped Cedar Crest 2-1 Friday. Brady Thomas tossed a complete game and doubled in both Solanco runs in the fourth. Coming off a no-hitter against Lampeter-Strasburg, Thomas allowed five hits and two walks while fanning four.
"Brady didn't have his best stuff like he did against L-S, but he really battled," coach Tom Fish said. "He wanted to finish the game and he did a great job of seeing the finish line and getting to it." Colin Ewaka was 3 for 3 to raise his batting average to .600 and leads the team in hits. "Colin had some great practices so we put him in the lineup," said Fish. "It's pretty amazing what he's doing." Last Wednesday, Warwick blanked the Mules 6-0. Solanco had three hits and did not have a runner reach second base. Josh Kreider allowed one earned run in three innings of work. "He kept us in the game and that's all you can ask," Fish said. The Mules made five errors, several of which came back to haunt them. Only one of the six runs was earned. "It wasn't a game to remember," said Fish. "We didn't play well on defense and I thought we'd do a little better against their pitcher." On Monday, April 18, Solanco upended Manheim Township 4-1. Freshman Hayden Fox yielded one unearned run in five innings of work. "Hayden really was fantastic against a pretty good lineup," said Fish. "At the beginning of the season, we weren't sure what we would get from him, but he has exceeded our wildest expectations. His turn came up in a must-win game and he was awesome. He does his best work when he's in trouble, He really bears down. He hit the same spot just below the knees 20 times and when you keep throwing it to the same spot, the umpires are going to start calling it a strike. His control was really impressive." The Mules jumped on top with two in the first on RBI singles by Ewaka and Bailey Keys. Township got on the board in in the fourth, but Solanco answered with a run in the home half. Freshman Joel McGuire singled and the Mules manufactured a run thanks to his good baserunning. "We knew Joel would be a dependable defensive player and has done more on offense than we could've asked. He finds a way to get on base." Ewaka allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings to secure the save. Fish said Thomas made a couple of nice plays at shortstop. Solanco (6-6 overall, 4-4 league) entered the week tied for second in Section Two with Elizabethtown and Conestoga Valley. "I still have confidence in this group," said Fish. "We are playing as good as any of the teams behind [first place] Ephrata. Comments are closed.
