by Bud Hart Last week the JV Mules outscored their opposition by a 58-7 margin. The Mules defeated Lebanon 24-1 in three innings, Manheim Township 20-2 in four innings, and Elizabethtown 14-4 in five innings. On Monday, May 1, Gabby Sheets made her debut inside the circle against Lebanon at home and picked up the win, striking out six, surrendering one base hit, and walking three. “Gabby threw the ball well in her first appearance in the circle this season,” said head coach Chad McDowell. “Gabby has battled through some nagging injuries over the past two seasons that limited her chances to pitch.”
Sheets not only threw well, she was perfect at the plate going four for four with a double and three singles, knocking in two runs. “I am proud of Gabby’s perseverance in getting back into the circle and her performance today with Lebanon.” The player normally inside the circle was the offensive leader for the Mules on this occasion. Sierra Dean knocked in five runs on the strength of a grand slam and two singles. Kelsey Sheets also contributed, leading off the game with a round tripper and adding a single. Other multiple base hits were credited to Skyla Townsley, who pounded one deep for a grand slam and added a single for four RBIs. Rachel Witmer added two singles which led to four runs batted in and Desiree DeHaven drove one deep for a two-run home run and added a single for four RBIs. Noelle Schneider, Mackenzie Britigan and Claudia Kennedy all singled, with Schneider’s base hit knocking in two. Dean got the nod at Neffsville on Tuesday, May 2. She scattered four hits striking out five while issuing no walks in a three-inning 20-2 win. “Sierra hit her spots and she had great command of the strike zone,” added McDowell. “She overpowered the Township batters and she recorded the outs that we needed.” Tori Lawson swung the big bat in this one with a grand slam and a single, knocking in five runs. Schneider went three for three, DeHaven went two for two, and Kelsey Sheets ended up going two for three. Dean had only one hit, but it was a classic, a solo home run. Townsley also singled for the Mules. On Wednesday, May 3, the Mules headed to Elizabethtown to face the always challenging Bears. In this one the Bears came out the significant losers, 14-4, as Dean earned the win despite surrendering seven hits in five innings of work. She struck out seven and walked three. “Sierra made the pitches to get the results we expected,” said the coach. “She trusted her defense behind her and they made the plays to produce the outs for her.” Dean, always a threat at the plate, led the way with two singles and a double driving in four runs. Gabby Sheets missed hitting for the cycle going three for four with a single, double and triple driving in three base runners. Lawson went two for four with two stolen bases and Britigan went deep circling the bases for a solo home run. Schneider, Townsley and Kelsey Sheets also recorded base hits. “Playing Elizabethtown is always fun,” added McDowell. “It is a rivalry game that everyone gets excited about playing, no matter what level of competition. I was pleased with the way our team responded to the big game atmosphere.” Comments are closed.
