by Bud Hart Ten senior teams and four junior teams participated in the inaugural Solanco Baseball Booster’s Wiffle Ball Tournament played at the high school on Friday and Saturday, February 10 and 11. The winners of the Golden Wiffle Ball were team Rock (senior) and the Legends (junior). Members of the Rock are Mike Worthington, Dillon Marsh, Zach Switzer, Dylan Byler and Dawson Kreider. Legend members were Sean Keller, Nate Miller, Zach Shambaugh, Avery Jacobson and Cody Chapman. Each team entering the tournament paid a $50 entry fee to participate in the five player - with one alternate - team. The initial tourney brought in nearly $1200, which included the entrance fees, raffles and concessions.
According to Lesley Shaw, a member of the Boosters, both the raffle baskets and concessions were donated, this contributed significantly to the proceeds appreciated. The Solanco Boosters were also very appreciative of the cooperation they received from the Octorara High School Baseball Boosters, who loaned the nets used in the playing of the game, which requires no running and is based on where the ball hits or lands and uses “Ghost” runners. Both an umpire and scorekeeper are needed. “Our goal was to make this a fun, friendly competitive event for the whole community,” wrote Shaw. “At the same time raise some funds for the high school baseball team to help with some of the expenses that are not covered in the school budget.” Shaw added that everyone on the committee worked very hard using their time and talents to make this first year occasion a success. Feedback has been gathered and the Boosters are excited to discuss what they can do to make this a bigger and better event. “We are fortunate enough to have space within the gym to create two more fields,” said Shaw. “We are hoping that more teams will join us in the fun of hoping to walk away with the Golden Wiffle Ball.” Comments are closed.
