by Bud Hart Solanco's track teams visited the Eagles on Tuesday, April 18; the good news being the girls won their second meet of the season (97-53). The bad news? The boys lost (60-90). “The girls competed hard producing 11 personal bests and picking up all but four firsts,” said head coach Ivan Haines.
Again the team was led by senior trackster Jen Eberly. Eberly won the 100-meter high hurdles (16.5-seconds), the 300-meter hurdles (49.3), the long jump (15-feet, 11-inches) and ran a leg of the winning 1600-meter relay team (4-minutes, 22.4-seconds), along with Kerith Paine, Hannah Sweda and Cortney Johnson. Three other seniors picked up a win in their respective disciplines. Kelly Cook placed first in the high jump (4’-10”); Amanda Swenson in the 200-meter dash (29.8) and Johnson won the 800-meter run (2:27). It was a personal best for Cook and Johnson. Haines is excited because that means underclasspersons are earning points for the team. Earning a first place position for the Mules were freshman Sweda in the 1600-meter run (5:49.4), sophomore Paine in the 400-meter dash (1:07) and freshman Alana Yoder in the 3200-meter run (12:40). Haines said the bright spot of the meet featured his throwers. “Three throwers were able to throw PR’s,” said Haines. “Anna Cooney (shot put) threw a PR (36’, 7.5”) bettering her previous throw by half an inch. Troyanna Miller also improved her PR (104’, 3”) and standings in the discus by two feet, and Nathaly Molinarez (javelin) increased her PR (98’, 11”) by seven feet.” Both Cooney and Miller have qualified for districts. Cooney placed first in her discipline, both Miller and Molinarez finished second. Junior Sophia Plechner earned her first win in the pole vault (8’ 6”). Second place finishers for the Mules were Swenson (100-meter dash), Morgan Perry (1600-meter run), Aubree Roop (3200-meter run), Allyson Osborne (pole vault) and Miller (shot put). Earning a team point by placing third were Sophia Baker (100-meter hurdles), Casey Weder (100-meter dash), Jacqueline Groff (400-meter dash), Cook (triple jump), Jada Brown and Montana Lockhart TIED (high jump) and Lydia Fetterman (javelin). In addition to the 1600-meter relay win, Solanco earned first in the 3200-meter relay (13:12.7) and the 400-meter relay (56.0-seconds). The 3200-meter team was comprised of Paine, Dana Landis, Holly Cunningham and Jaden Willis, three sophomores and a freshman. Weder, Ryleigh Ferrari, Cook and Swenson ran the legs of the 400-meter relay event. Weder is a sophomore, Ferrari a freshman. “I am looking forward to seeing what this team of girls can do,” said Haines. On their half of the meet, the Eagles boys’ team swept the 800-meter run, the 3200-meter run, the high jump and the triple jump disciplines. Solanco earned firsts in six of the 18 disciplines contested. Alex McDonald won the 100-meter dash (11.6), Brit Yoder both the 200-meter dash (24.1) and the 400-meter dash (53.1), Billy Maeda the pole vault (9’, 6”) and Dylan Schaeffer both the shot put (46’, 4”) and discus (138’, 3”). Second place finishes went to Nick Yannutz (110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter hurdles), Will Paredes-Jimenez (100-meter dash), Mike Grech (long jump), Alex Hindman (javelin) and Ben Martin (discus). Earning a point by placing third were Dan Siegrist (110-meter high hurdles), Christian Stead (1600-meter run), Tyler Williams (200-meter dash), Nafis Moore (long jump and triple jump), Ryan Yaletchko (pole vault) and Jayson Hopkins (shot put). Coach Haines had praise for many of his track and field members. “Although a little under the weather senior Brit Yoder continues to run well, earning a first in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash,” said Haines. “Newcomer, junior Alex McDonald, earned his first win of the season in the 100-meter dash, running his personal best in 11.5-seconds.” The Mules also won the 400-meter relay behind the efforts of Paredes-Jimenez, McDonald, Eric Hopkins and Kyle Dombach. Haines said the throwers on this occasion were the only ones to outscore their opponents. They were led by junior Dylan Shaeffer, who won both the shot put and discus disciplines, establishing a personal best in the discus. Hindman also established a personal best in the javelin, as did Martin in the discus. Comments are closed.
