St. Mary's Little League's Junior softball All-Stars forced a decisive game for the state title by topping Rising Sun 11-9 Tuesday, July 12, at Eder Park. The two teams will meet Wednesday night at 6:30 with the state championship on the line. St. Mary's led 5-0 before Rising Sun rallied to tie it in the third.
St. Mary's came right back in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good. Hannah Bentley doubled in a run and winning pitcher Caitlyn Burch belted a two-run homer over the centerfield fence. Rising Sun responded with two runs in the home half to trim the deficit down to 8-7. Ingrid Miller and Madison Perry each singled. With out one, Abby Backert walked to load the bases and Taylor Mantyk followed with a two-run single. In the fifth, Jessica Cullison drove in a run to lengthen the St. Mary's lead to 9-7 and Bentley knocked in another run in the sixth and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-7. Rising Sun's Alyssa Paulette plated a run in the bottom of the sixth. Rising Sun scored another un on an error in the seventh but the game ended on a soft line drive to third. The District 7 representative had stormed out to a 5-0 lead. Burch doubled in a run in the first. In the second, Bentley knocked in a run with a double and Burch launched a rocket over the centerfielder's head for an RBI double. She eventually scored on a groundout and Savannah Jabr added an RBI double. Rising Sun countered quickly. Kahlie Kilgore singled to get things started. Mantyk had an RBI single off the pitcher's glove to make it 5-2. Given new life after the catcher dropped a foul pop, Madison Cooper lined a two-run single to left to tie the game.
