St. Mary's Little League Junior softball All-Stars claimed the state title with a 12-2 triumph over Rising Sun in five innings Thursday evening at Eder Park. Emerging from the loser's bracket after an opening game 12-5 loss to Rising Sun, St, Mary's posted two straight wins to earn a trip to the Eastern Regional tournament.
In Thursday's winner take all game, St. Mary's stormed out to a 5-0 lead, scoring all five of its runs with two outs. Danielle Schrader led off the game with an infield hit. With two outs, slugger Caitlyn Burch reached on an error. Rising Sun almost caught Schrader straying too far off third base but Schrader was ruled to have been interfered with by a Rising Sun infielder. Jaclyn Burch, another one of the Burch triplets in the starting lineup along with the second baseman Shanyn, made it hurt by lining a two-run single to left. Meanwhile, the winning pitcher Caitlyn Burch retired the first six Rising Sun hitters. With two outs and no one on base in the third, Caitlyn Burch singled and went to third on Jaclyn Burch's bloop single with Jaclyn Burch moving to second on the throw to third. Allie Nelson reached on an error to make it 3-0 and Savannah Jabr fisted a two-run single to left. St. Mary's busted the game open with six runs in the fourth. Caitlyn Burch belted a two-run triple over the head of the right fielder and Nelson and Haley Morris each added an RBI single. Bentley drove in a run with a groundout to make it 12-0 in the fifth. Rising Sun finally got on the board with two outs in the bottom half. Taylor Mantyk recorded a two-run single on a fly ball to right-center which the centerfielder could not hang onto after a long run. The next batter was retired on a fly ball to left to end the game by the mercy rule. Comments are closed.
