The Rising Sun baseball team scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to defeat C. Milton Wright 7-0 Friday afternoon. Cole Benjamin tossed a complete game shutout with 11 Ks to earn the win. The Tigers were the designated visiting team for the game even though it was played in Rising Sun. The Mustangs were considered the visiting team when the two schools met earlier in the season at C. Milton Wright. The Tigers lost that game 4-0. Jake Bower ignited the seven-run uprising with an opposite field single to left-center. Alex Billings entered the game to pinch-run. Jack Stewart executed a sacrifice bunt and the throw to first was wild and went out of play putting runners on second and third.
The Mustangs issued an intentional walk to Jake Keane to load the bases for catcher Derek Schoff. Schoff fell behind 1-2 before staying back on a low, inside curve ball, and driving it down the right field line for a two-run double. "I just tried to shorten up and put the bat on the ball," Schoff said. "Wherever I hit it, I figured somebody would score." Schoff's double opened the floodgates, figuratively and almost literally. Rain began to fall during the inning. Frankie Pyle and Benjamin each added an RBI single and Jake Bower belted an RBI double in the frame. Benjamin got into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh but got the final out with runners on second and third to preserve the shutout. "It was a long wait," said Benjamin, who will pitch collegiately at The University of Delaware. "We had a long inning so I got a little tired toward the end. But I just focused, kicked back, and tried to give whatever I had left in the tank." Benjamin had throw five innings the previous Monday in an 11-1 win over Patterson Mill. Working on three days rest, the hard-throwing righty was able to go the distance. "Every day I feel strong," he said. "I always feel confident in my pitches and what I'm going to throw. When you have a catcher (Schoff) behind the plate who stops everything, you're always feeling strong and you've got a good game going on." Comments are closed.
